It costs 25p to make one entire makiga brick.
These are made on-site, from the local red Kenyan soil from the site ground itself, with a dash of cement and water, using a special 'Makiga' brick machine.
You place all the ingredients into the mould, press down the lever to compress the materials into a strong, solid brick. These bricks are formed to slot together so that no cement is needed for Makiga brick buildings. Not only do they make beautiful and strong walls, but the lack of cement saves on cost and on environmental impact, too (cement production uses a lot of fossil energy).
40 bricks will build a solid few layers of a wall of one of our classrooms!
When you purchase 40 Makiga bricks you will receive a thankyou card to the delivery address. Please ensure that you enter the delivery address of the gift-receiver when ordering.
Please note that you will not receive 40 Makiga bricks as this is not a sales purchase but a donation of a suggested amount.
The donation amount suggested would cover the price of 40 Makiga bricks to be used to build the school on site in Riandu, Kenya, but will not necessarily be used for this specific item- although will be used for building materials for the school as needed.
The thankyou card will arrive within 5 working days for UK donations and around 10 working days for donations made from Kenya. Any other non-UK addresses may take longer, but we will do our best to get them to gift-receivers by Christmas.
